Mebar Tso

Mebartsho, or the Burning Lake, is a sacred site in Bhutan’s Tang Valley, near Bumthang. It is revered as the place where Pema Lingpa, the great tertön (treasure revealer), discovered hidden treasures (terma) of Guru Rinpoche in the 15th century.

According to legend, Pema Lingpa had a vision of a temple beneath the lake. To prove his authenticity, he dived into the water holding a lit lamp, emerging with sacred treasures while the lamp remained alight. The discovered relics include a Self-spoken Guru statue, a scroll, and a ritual skull.

The lake is known for its spiritual significance, believed to radiate natural and spiritual energy. The nearby Pema Tekchok Choling Nunnery, Bhutan’s first shedra for women, maintains the site. Tsatsas—small clay mounds used in Buddhist rituals—can be found around the lake.

Despite its serene beauty, Mebartsho has strong currents and can be dangerous. Since 2011, several people, including tourists, have drowned in its waters.
