Kurjay Lhakhang
Kurjey Lhakhang,སྐུ་རྗེས་ ཡང་ན་ གུ་རུ་རིན་པོ་ཆེ་གི་ ཞབས་རྗེས་, also known as Kurjey Monastery, is located in Bumthang, Bhutan. It is the final resting place of Bhutan’s first three kings and is home to a sacred tree believed to be a terma left by Guru Padmasambhava.
According to legend, Sindhuraja, the ruler of Bumthang, fell gravely ill after angering the local deity, Shelging Karpo. Desperate for a cure, his attendant sought help from Guru Padmasambhava, who traveled from Nepal. The Guru subdued Shelging Karpo using a ritual dance and a sacred water source called Kurje Drupchhu, ultimately restoring Sindhuraja’s life. During this time, Padmasambhava meditated in a cave, leaving an imprint of his body—giving the site its name, Kurjey (“Body Imprint”).
The Kurjey Lhakhang complex consists of three temples: Guru Lhakhang, Sampa Lhundrup Lhakhang, and Ka Goen Phur Sum Lhakhang, with the oldest being Guru Lhakhang, built by Sindhuraja.
